Aphids and one worm.

Hurry!, hurry!, bring the squad forces!, my garden is been invaded!. I noticed days ago some dry holes in a couple of my green beans leaves as it something was eating it and I found out aphids were flying like helicopters when I shaked some of the little plants leaves. I will have to get a spray solution for my plants. Then I found a little-tiny monster worm eating one leaf of my green bean and I made my plants some justice!, I squeezed the barbarian breath of life out of his worm body!. Some of my green beans plants are more than 6 inches tall already at just 14 days of their life.

First 14 days of  life of my first square foot garden.

Natural events and germination of my first plants-1st part

One day after sowing my first vegetables seeds, the very next day we got an afternoon thunderstorm with intense heavy, but short rain. I filled a bucket of rainwater so my plants taste heaven latter on the week once again). My garden soil got plenty of cloud H2O.(Saturday, July 17).

After coming back from grocery shopping at 1:30PM, another short heavy rain came out of nowhere. It seems I can't stop watching the local weather forecast for one day because you distract a little bit a boom!, there you have more rain!.(Sunday, July 18).

Yesterday and today the sun didn't shine all day, sporadic showers and thunderstorms were observed last days. My radishes are going strong, almost all of them are already tiny, little plants; but my beets are worrying me because only 5 from 16 already germinated. The bush green beans too are on a snail pace, it's been only less than 4 days since I sow my seeds, but I guess it's not that bad.(Monday, July 19).

Muggy, splashes of rain, it comes suddenly, it goes away same way. The good thing is I don't need to water my plants. My first green beans are sprout.(Thursday, July 22).

Weather has been hot, sometimes for hours cloudy and sometimes with minutes of rain.

Of all the green beans plants I buried in the soil, only 33% germinated, that's a bad ratio, but I readed green beans need not much water after been been buried in soil and maybe it is because of the rain we had here the next several days, but who knows, after all I'm just a vegetable garden rookie in the process of gaining experience.

So because the other 66% of my green beans didn't germinate, today I filled some of those empty spaces in my garden with swiss chard, there was not other option but swiss chard because of the high temperatures right now.

Today I sowed tomatoes indoors, that is because tomato seeds can't be buried directly into soil(they do not germinate), so I filled a cup with vermiculite and water and buried the seeds there. After 2 weeks I'll move the plants to my garden, where they will develop hopefully in happy and productive adults

You know here in Texas, because of the short spring and high temperatures, most tomatoes stop bearing fruit with high heat and there are only few tomato plants(specially indeterminate) able to keep producing even in high 90's and even above 100's Fahrenheit. Those are some cherry tomato plants and some hybrids and my super sweet 100 hybrid cherry tomato plants are easy and fool proof for a beginner like me, at least that's what I got informed, so until my tomatoes and my swiss chard keep growing, I'll keep writing more about their development.

Mi primer square foot garden

Bajo el intenso sol de verano hoy a medio día, después de no haber podido armar ayer mi square foot garden(box) por la tarde porque mi hermano estaba ocupando el taladro y la sierra, hoy por fin esta armado. Debo decir que no me había quedado muy bien cuadrado de la base de plywood, pero al final con otros pedazos de madera que sobraron de la barda de madera que mi hermano y Antonio construyen, con eso tuve para terminar de armar mi cajón. Tres litros y medio de agua y 2 horas después ya tenia todo listo, aunque a esa hora del día y en pleno verano si que es deshidratadamente intenso. Aun me falta ponerle los separadores a la caja(16), pero eso ya se lo pondré después.

Comenzando a planear mi jardín de vegetales

Desde hace un año aproximadamente había tenido ganas de cultivar vegetales en el departamento donde antes vivía, pero como era una terraza muy chica de cemento(sin contar que había un árbol enorme en el que no dejaba entrar la luz), la idea de llevarlo a cabo no me terminaba de convencer. Fue hasta estos principios de año que haciéndonos de nuestra casa con un patio grande la idea de sembrar y cultivar se hizo mas fuerte, solo que primero había que hacerle varios arreglos a la casa(que aun le faltan, aunque ya menos). Entonces esta temporada no pude sembrar porque el inicio de siembra que es aquí a finales de marzo o muy primeros días de abril me agarraron prácticamente en los días de la entrega de la casa y lo primero era hacer los cambios y arreglos de la casa que llevan tiempo y que ya con mas calma se terminaran en este año.

Desde que vivíamos en el departamento que rentábamos antes me compre uno libros de métodos de cultivo para tener una idea de como tendría que hacerlo. Y es que si es un tema que te llame la atención aprendes muchas cosas, principalmente, la duración de tiempo entre la siembra y la cosecha de las diferentes variedades de vegetales y frutas. En mi caso, no quiero saber nada de árboles, tuvimos que quitar uno grande que estaba detrás en el patio y 4 medianos, aun falta uno que es algo grande y es que los quitamos para que no den problemas las raíces en la fundación de la casa con el tiempo.

Ya tengo planeado que voy a sembrar y como hay que hacerlo, antes no estaba muy seguro, pero ahora ya tengo todos los pasos a seguir sobre como debo hacerlo, es mas ya tengo hasta las diferentes semillas, solo falta que construya la caja de madera que se separara en 16 cuadros de un pie cuadrado cada uno, esto es usando el método de "square ft gardening".

Aunque mi siembra empezara hasta los finales del próximo marzo, al menos así en estos meses construiré mi square foot garden en el patio, ya que aparentemente solo podrá ser posible ponerle césped al patio a finales de marzo del 2011, debido al paso de tortuga con el que vamos sacando la basura de los árboles que hemos cortado, eso a pesar de que el verano recién comenzó, se podría poner el césped en este mismo mes si sacáramos la basura mas rápido, aun falta otoño, pero también podemos poner la mitad del césped y la otra mitad en marzo, en fin no hago suposiciones y espero pongamos todo el césped este mismo año para terminar todo de golpe y no andar por retazos.
